Siblings in Children’s Harbor Residential Program

“I was born with cerebral palsy. My mother and father were high school sweethearts, but when my father left my mother started drinking. By age 6, I was left alone to care for my 2 year old brother. I had to have several surgeries on my back and legs during that time. My mother was drinking so much that she could not help me,  and I remember thinking ‘I have to get out of this wheelchair and walk again because I have to take care of Todd’. I tried to hold things together, but one day it just got to be too much. My teacher asked me why I was crying, I told her about my life, and that night the police took me and my brother away from the house. Coming to Children’s Harbor was a relief. I know my brother and I are safe. I have people who love and care about me, and I don’t have to be the parent. I love it here.”
